George Morrell Dickson, 77, of Hunter, N.D. died Thursday, February 12, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
Known by friends as “Morrell”, he was the son of George and Gunelia (Bratholt) Dickson. He was born on August 23, 1931, at the home of his grandparents, Gust and Emma Bratholt, in Galesburg, N.D. Morrell attended Dows Grade School and Hunter High School. He was baptized and confirmed at Elm River Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Morrell was also a member of the First Lutheran Church in Hunter, N.D.
Morrell married Phyllis Wenaas on December 31, 1950 in First Lutheran Church in Hunter. They resided on the Dickson Farm near Galesburg until moving to Hunter in 1980. They also had a winter residence in Mesa, Ariz., and spent summers at their cabin on Melissa Lake near Detroit Lakes, Minn.

David C. Saar, 71, North Mankato, Minn., died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn. The funeral was held Tuesday, February 17 in Hosanna Lutheran Church, Mankato, Minn. Burial is in Tivoli Cemetery, rural Mankato.

Jeffrey Turner, 52, Arthur, died Monday, February 9, 2009 in the Arthur Good Samaritan Center, Arthur. The funeral was held Friday, February 13 in the Arthur United Methodist Church, Arthur.
Burial is in Holy Cross Cemetery – North, Fargo.

John Hoag

John “Jack” Hoag, 82, Arthur, N.D. died on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Palliative Care in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
John Keith Hoag, known to many as “Jack,” was born August 20, 1926 at Harwood, N.D. to Bender and Florence (Monson) Hoag. He was raised on the family farm near Arthur, N.D. and attended rural school graduating from Arthur High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy before returning to attend NDAC. Jack married Betty Petersen on October 20, 1947 at Arthur. They made their home near Arthur in Gunkel Township where they farmed for many years. They enjoyed traveling south in winter months to Cordes Lakes, Arizona while summer vacations were spent on South Twin Lake in Minnesota. He retired in 1990, and they moved into Arthur. Betty died in February 1991. Jack moved to Villa Maria Care Center in Fargo in December 2008.

Carrie Rossum

Carrie Rossum, 94, Fargo, N.D., died Thursday, February 5, 2009.
Carrie was born on May 3, 1914 in Dolliver, Iowa. She was the eldest daughter of Lawrence and Anna Harness. The family moved to the Casselton, N.D. area in the 1920’s where she attended school.
Carrie married Joe Schmidt and had one son, Lyle. She lived in San Francisco during WWII and worked in the defense industry. She later married Frank Holmes and had one son, David. Together, they owned the City Café in Casselton. Carrie later moved to Moorhead, Minn. and was employed by the Moorhead Public Schools and Moorhead State University. She retired in 1977.
Her sons, Lyle Schmidt and David Holmes; her parents, and her brothers, Wayne and Ronald Harness preceded her in death.
Carrie is survived by her sister, Annabelle Olwell, Fargo; grandson, Joel Schmidt, and several nieces and nephews.

Repealing the pharmacy bill may not benefit rural North Dakota

Competition and lower prices, those are the main reasons why there is a push to reverse the current pharmacy operating standards that require a majority of the stock in a pharmacy to be owned by a licensed pharmacist.
A passage of house bill 1440, may also have negative effects.

Informing and thanking the community

Over 50 people came to the CBA membership drive meeting on Feb. 3, which included Russ Newman as the featured speaker. Newman, vice-president of operations at the Tharaldson Ethanol Plant, just outside of Casselton, provided the group with a brief overview and history of the plant, statistics, future goals and its impact on the area economy.
He began by stating the tremendous support from the community for the project.
“For the last few months I have been involved with this project and I must say that it has been a great experience,” Newman said. “The city and the township has opened up their arms to us. Not one negative comment has ever come out of this community and that’s a credit to you folks,” Newman said.

Looking to enhance hot lunch program

Central Cass school will soon begin conducting an internal review of the hot lunch program.
“We want to determine how we can enhance the program,” said Central Cass Superintendent Mike Severson.
Specifically, a committee will review nutritional values and a cost analysis.

Two local students win awards for inventions

Anyone can be an inventor. Sometimes it just means taking the initiative to try.
On Jan. 13-14, Northern Cass students Ben Longlett and Adam Schreiner competed at the Marketplace for Entrepreneurs in Bismarck and both received awards.
“One of my teachers from school told me about it and I thought (Marketplace for Entrepreneurs) was pretty cool,” Adam Schreiner said.
He then told his friend Ben Longlett about it and both agreed that they would individually create inventions and compete in the event.

Kindred Community Club becomes non-profit

There is a new non-profit in town which aims to promote the city of Kindred.
The Kindred Community Club was officially incorporated as a non-profit this month. The group has been meeting for a few months, in hopes of creating another successful Kindred Community Days.
We wanted to make the organization more formal, said Greg Holder, president of the club.
But the group isn’t going to focus only on Kindred Days.
