And Deb Tarvestad, owner of Hunter Café & Bakery, is glad to serve the community in that roll along with a cup of fresh hot coffee.
“Every small community needs a meeting place,” Tarvestad said. “And I’m glad that they pick here. I think community is so important in a small town and I’m glad to be a part of this one.”
The community has been a source of support for the business even before the re-opening of the restaurant in 2002. (more…)

The Reverend John Mehl spent 10 years serving at the Martins Lutheran Church in Casselton from 1977 to 1987. During that entire decade virtually no one in his parish of nearly 1,000 people knew that Mehl served for three years in the Army, seeing heavy action in the front from 1943 to 1945 during World War II.
“Nobody knew,” commented Casselton citizen Ken Habiger, a long-time resident of Casselton. “I didn’t know until I attended a meeting of World War II veterans in Fargo many years ago. As I was sitting there, I saw this man who looked very familiar to me. I remember asking myself, ‘is that John Mehl?’ And sure enough, I went over to talk with him, and it was the reverend.”
Habiger and Casselton citizens not only found out that Mehl, who today lives in Fargo and spends winters in Arizona, was a combat veteran, but that he was also seriously injured during one of his war-time missions. An injury that easily could have killed Mehl. (more…)

Casselton has been selected as one of 2,000 communities nationwide, including 18 communities in North Dakota, to promote the understanding and awareness of underage drinking and it’s impact on individuals, families and society by holding a Town Hall Meeting. The Town Hall Meeting, hosted by Generations Connecting, will be held during the week of March 31 – April 4 2008 to coincide with the national observance of Alcohol Awareness Month.
Generations Connecting became aware of the project, stemming from the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking, last fall and applied to be part of the effort. The group will receive a modest stipend and educational resources to assist with planning and community education. The Surgeon General stresses that underage drinking continues to be a leading public health problem in the United States threatening the safety and healthy development of more young people than any other substance – more than tobacco and illicit drugs. The latest report on the project, given by City Engineer Kyle Meyer included new cost estimates and a call for specific action and resolutions from the council. The project had been scaled back some, taking out the retention pond, explained Meyer. The new cost estimates put the project at $990,000, including a $120,000 grant. The project will be paid for by Maple River Grain, Underverth, and other businesses and owners in the TIF (tax increment finance) district. Discussion focused on the cost of redirecting the water and the cost of the equipment needed to efficiently do so.
A couple property owners were at the meeting and expressed their concern for the cost. Property owner Dave Piper proposed a different rerouting idea for the water flow and asked if this would cut the cost of the project. There was some discussion on this idea but no further pursuit of it. (more…)
